Rivendell Chinchillas

Water is an important part of a chin's diet. It helps keep the body healthy and hydrated. Clean, fresh water should be offered at all times. There are various types of water bottles available, choose what works for you. Be sure to find a bottle that doesn't drip. Glass bottles are usually prefered because plastics can harbor bacteria.

Thoroughly cleaning your water bottle is recommended on a regular basis. If at any time you see the growth of any algae or bacteria immediately clean the water bottle. My daughters are sometimes grossed out when the see me repairing a water line and have it in my mouth to clamp it off while repairing a valve, but if I don't want the water in my mouth, then why would my chins?

There is a large debate on tap vs. bottled water. If you drink your tap water, then it should be fine for your chins. Many types of bottled water is simply filtered water. I recommend using a filtration system. Filtering the water can be efficent and economical with the use of a pitcher type filer available at many retail stores such as the Brita or Pur filter pitchers. If you have a home filtering system installed then you should have no problems using the same water you use.

Bowls should not be used for chins because they can be tipped or stepped in. A wet chin promotes fungus or other fur related issues. It also quickly can become contaminated with fur, shavings, dust, urine, or feces.
