Rivendell Chinchillas

The "rescue rules"

We strive to provide lots of help and guidance to help make your adoption experience with chins a great one! Here is a list of our policy, please review it and let us know if you have any questions.

Surrenders:

We have a "no foul" surrender policy! We do not blame, charge, or otherwise persecute people who surrender their animals to us. We prefer to receive all chinchillas and their equipment ( cages, food, etc) to help discourage acquiring new animals until situations have improved. We do not pay for surrenders, so please don't contact us asking us to buy your chins for our rescue. We aim for chins who need re-homed immediately or are living in terrible conditions and the owners realize they can not properly care for this animal.

Adoptions:

We try to get all rescues in for a vet check and let them settle here for a couple weeks to assess their personality and habits before listing rescue animals up for adoption.  We send home all rescues with food, the supplies they came with ( unless they were deemed un safe and removed ) and get them to a home that fits their personality and needs. We try to hold several conversations ( via phone or email ) and a meet before releasing the chin to it's new home to help make sure it's a good match. We do not have a contract, I believe such contract is only as good as the person who signs it. If I don't trust you to sign to and adhere to a contract, chances are I'm not going to even adopt to you.

Adoption Fees:

Adoption fees vary per chin and situation. We often get asked if the animals are surrendered at no charge, why do we charge for them? Charging an adoption fee helps us make sure the person can care for the animal. Vets, food, bedding and such aren't free, so why should the initial purchase be? No one goes into a car dealership and expects them to give them a car for free just because they promise they'll change the oil, keep it washed, and have it serviced when needed. Animals are living creatures, and should be treated even better than something that's not living! Adoption fees help pay for vet checks or care, housing, cleaning, re-socializing, food, bedding, toys, and all of that, which mostly goes with the animal! We never charge "new price" for a "used animal", and often when asked if I can reduce the fee, I'll tell people to go price a cage, food, hay, bedding, and animal at a pet store and I'll charge them only half of that for the said animal, often, even at half price it's MUCH less!

Deposits:

We require at least 50% deposit to hold a chin, even a rescue. This allows us to be sure that the chin is sold and the buyer is serious. Generally a deposit will hold a chin for 1 month, unless other arrangements are made. We are glad to hold a chin until it can be picked up, delivered, or transportation arrangements made. We try to get rescues into their new homes soon after finding the right family for them, more often than not they are accustomed to the "pet life" in someone's home with attention, and we try to get them back to that situation.

Payment:

Deposits made more than 14 days prior to delivery may be made by check, money order, cash, or Pay Pal. Any payment after that must be made via Pay Pal (payment must clear before delivery) or cash. We DO NOT takes checks beyond this point! Unfortunately we've been taken advantage of too many times by doing this.

Delivery of Animals:

All animals must be paid in full at the time possession is taken of the animal by either the buyer or person acting as a transport for the said animal(s). Once the animal leaves our care we can not be responsible for it.

Pedigrees:

Rescues do not come with pedigrees unless specifically stated.

Health Guarantee:

Unfortunately we can not guarantee the health of an animal once it has left our care. If you animal comes down with a problem soon after leaving our care please contact us as soon as possible, we will be glad to work with you to get the animal back to health. Failure to contact us immediately voids any implied health guarantee. Since we can't be sure what happens to the animals once they leave our care we must handle each situation on a case by case basis.  We can not guarantee the genetic health of animals that were not bred by us, although we are glad to help offer any advice or suggestions on any situation that may occur with animals purchased from us.
