A chinchillas teeth when examined should be orange in color similar to a carrot. This coloration is due to them storing calcium and other minerals in their teeth and bones. A pregnant or nursing chin may have less orange teeth because she's giving so much to her kit and producing milk. If your chin's teeth are white you should review your feed program, if it is a chin that is recovering for an illness or pregnancy then you may want to supplement with some calcium to help replace the lost stores.

This photo shows the oral cavity opened by cutting the tendons and ligaments that hold the mouth in position. You can see at the top the sharp incisors used to chew and break food and wood. Note the space between the incisors and the molars, in this section there is excess skin that serves as a check pouch. Although chins do not store food in their pouches like hamsters. The rear molars are used to grind food into smaller pieces. On the bottom you can see the tongue, although it appears very long the way it's attached limited mobility mostly to the area in front of the mouth pouch.
This animal suffered from root enlongation and severe tooth points which can be seen on the top molars.
